About Duolingo outages
Duolingo has an unusual outage sensitivity: The streak. A day missed because the service was unavailable feels like a loss of something earned, which is why even brief incidents produce disproportionate report volumes and why Duolingo has a streak repair mechanism.
The components that separate are sign-in, lesson delivery, progress syncing, leaderboards, and the shop and subscription layer. Progress that does not sync is the most consequential - Lessons completed offline can be lost if the app cannot upload them before the session expires. Leaderboards frequently fail on their own and are harmless. The app caches enough lesson content to work briefly offline, so a full outage usually shows up as a failure at the end of a lesson rather than at the start.
