Streaming status

Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Twitch and the services that deliver media. All 6 are checked every 20 minutes; the status beside each one is the result of its most recent check.

Streaming services fail at the edge, not the centre: Playback breaks in one region or on one device type while the rest of the world watches normally, which is why these outages are so often disputed.

How reliable streaming has been, last 30 days

Measured by our own checks, run every 20 minutes, not taken from any provider’s status page. 6 of 6 services have enough history to report.

YouTube has been the steadiest here over the last 30 days. Uptime is observed uptime: The share of measured time our checks got a usable answer. It excludes nothing, including announced maintenance.

Why streaming services go down

Video is delivered from cache servers placed inside internet providers, close to you. That design is what makes streaming possible and also what makes its outages so uneven. When one cache region fails, everyone on one ISP in one city loses playback while the service is provably healthy everywhere else. Both parties are telling the truth, which is why streaming outages generate more argument than any other category.

The second pattern is licensing and entitlement. Before a video plays, the app checks you are allowed to watch it. That check is a separate service, and when it stalls the app browses perfectly and simply refuses to start anything. Users read an entitlement failure as "my account is broken" rather than an outage.

What an outage here looks like

Browsing works, playback does not. An error code appears rather than a blank screen, and it is often the most useful thing on the page. Downloads already on the device keep playing, which is a strong signal the fault is in delivery.

When these services are under most strain

Sunday evening, and the minute a major release drops. Live sport is the hardest case in this whole directory: Demand arrives in one instant and cannot be deferred, so failures cluster at kick-off.

What to do when streaming is down

  1. Write the error code down before retrying. Streaming apps show genuinely diagnostic codes, and they are the fastest route to knowing whether the fault is your account, your network or the service.
  2. Try a different device on the same network. Smart TV apps are frequently the first to break and the last to be fixed, because they run older code than the phone app.
  3. Check a downloaded title. If offline playback works, the fault is in delivery or entitlement rather than the app itself.
