Banking & payments status
Banks, card processors, transfer networks and exchanges. All 10 are checked every 20 minutes; the status beside each one is the result of its most recent check.
Payment outages are the only ones here where waiting is the wrong instinct and retrying is genuinely risky, because a request that appears to fail may already have moved money.
How reliable banking & payments has been, last 30 days
Measured by our own checks, run every 20 minutes, not taken from any provider’s status page. 10 of 10 services have enough history to report.

Coinbase has been the steadiest here over the last 30 days. Uptime is observed uptime: The share of measured time our checks got a usable answer. It excludes nothing, including announced maintenance.
Why banking & payments services go down
A payment crosses several independent organisations: The app, the processor, the card network, the issuing bank. Any one of them can be degraded while the others are healthy, and the failure is reported to you by whichever party noticed first. That is why a declined card during an outage tells you almost nothing about where the fault actually is.
Banking systems are also the most heavily batched in this directory. Overnight processing windows mean a failure at the wrong hour delays settlement by a full day, so a thirty-minute outage can have a twenty-four-hour consequence. No other category has that shape.
What an outage here looks like
The app signs in and shows a balance, but payments decline or hang. Balances may be stale rather than wrong. Card payments in shops frequently keep working while the app does not, because they take a different path entirely.
When these services are under most strain
Paydays, the last working day of the month, and the hours around overnight settlement. Retail payment volume peaks on Friday and Saturday evening.
At a glance
- Typical duration
- 30 minutes to 2 hours
- Usual cause
- Processor capacity, or a link between two institutions
- Tell-tale sign
- Balance visible, transactions failing
- Risk
- The one category where retrying can cause real harm
What to do when banking & payments is down
- Do not retry a payment that appeared to fail. This is the single most important rule in this category. A timeout is not a decline, and duplicate payments are common and slow to reverse.
- Check your balance from a second channel before acting. Card, app and web often take different paths. A stale balance in one is not proof the money moved.
- Keep a second payment method. Processor outages are the most common failure here and they are specific to one provider. Another card frequently just works.
- Screenshot anything ambiguous. Reconciliation after a payment outage is much easier with a timestamp.
