Why social media services go down
Social platforms are read-heavy at enormous scale, and almost everything you see on a feed is assembled per person at the moment you ask for it. That ranking and assembly layer is the part that breaks. The posts are still in the database and the servers are still answering, but the service that decides what you should see has stalled, so the app opens to an empty timeline rather than an error.
The second common failure is authentication. Large social companies run shared login systems across several products, so one bad deploy can lock people out of a photo app, a messaging app and a headset at the same time. That is why social outages so often look co-ordinated across apparently unrelated brands.
What an outage here looks like
The app opens, your profile loads, and the feed spins forever. Posting fails silently or queues. Direct messages frequently keep working for a while after the feed has stopped, which is the clearest sign that the platform is partly up rather than down.

Evening in whichever region is awake, and instantly during breaking news. Social traffic is the spikiest of any category here: A single event can double load in under a minute, which is precisely when the ranking layer gives out.

What to do when social media is down
- Check a second product from the same company. If Instagram and Facebook fail together the problem is the shared platform, not the app you happened to open.
- Do not reinstall the app. It is the most common reaction and it never helps. You will lose your session and then be unable to log back in, because login is often the part that is broken.
- Try the web version. Mobile apps and the website frequently use different entry points. One working while the other does not tells you the outage is partial.
- Expect it back within the hour. Feed-assembly failures are usually resolved by a rollback, and rollbacks are fast.
