About Netflix outages
Netflix splits cleanly into two systems: The control plane that handles sign-in, browsing and playback authorisation, which runs in AWS, and Open Connect, Netflix's own content delivery network with appliances installed directly inside ISPs. Knowing which is broken explains almost every outage report.
If you can browse but nothing plays, the control plane is usually fine and the problem is delivery or licensing - Typically an error code such as NW-2-5 or UI-800-3. If the app will not sign in or the home screen is empty, the control plane is affected, which is also the pattern seen during large AWS regional incidents. Because Open Connect is ISP-local, playback can fail for one provider's customers while the rest of the country streams normally; that is the most common shape of a Netflix problem and the reason reports often cluster by network rather than by region.
