About Wikipedia outages
Wikipedia is one of the few top-tier websites that does not run on a commercial cloud. The Wikimedia Foundation operates its own data centres and caching layer, which makes its outages independent of the AWS and Cloudflare incidents that take down much of the rest of the web.
Because the read path is heavily cached, the most common partial failure is a site that reads normally but rejects edits - The database layer is affected while the cache serves pages. Other patterns are one language edition being unavailable while others work, image thumbnails failing while article text loads, and search returning nothing. A planned data centre switchover happens roughly annually and puts the site into read-only mode for a scheduled window.
