About Google Maps outages
Google Maps is two things: A consumer app and a platform API that powers store locators, delivery tracking and ride-hailing in other companies' products. A Maps Platform incident therefore breaks maps inside apps that have no visible connection to Google.
For consumers, the components that separate are the base map tiles, search and place data, live traffic, and turn-by-turn navigation. Navigation continuing while search fails is common, because offline map data covers routing but not place lookup. Grey tiles with a working interface point at the tile service. For developers, the giveaway is a map that renders with a "For development purposes only" watermark, which is a billing or API key problem rather than an outage. Google reports Maps Platform on the Cloud Status Dashboard; the consumer app has no separate status page.
