The IsItDown.now CLI checks website status from your terminal
The IsItDown.now CLI puts current service status, one-off website checks and confirmed outage history in a shell command. It is free, open source, dependency-free and uses the same read-only data as the website and MCP server.
Install
Node.js 18 or newer is the only requirement. The package is served directly by IsItDown.now, so the command installs the exact build whose checksum appears below.
npm install --global https://isitdown.now/integrations/download/isitdown-now-cli.tgz
Version 1.0.0 · 4 KB · Linux, macOS and Windows
Use it
Give the command a monitored service or a full domain. A monitored service returns its current state, 30-day uptime, reports and evidence link. Any other public website gets one live check from our servers.
isitdown github.com
isitdown example.com
isitdown down
isitdown outages youtube.com --days 30
isitdown search cloud
Add --json to any command for output that a script, CI job or status dashboard can consume.
Commands
| Command | Answer |
|---|---|
| isitdown github.com | Status, response time, uptime and reports for a monitored service. |
| isitdown check example.com | A live check of any public website from our network. |
| isitdown down | Every service with a confirmed outage right now. |
| isitdown outages [service] | Confirmed incidents from the last 7 days, or up to 90 with --days. |
| isitdown search words | Matching services, domains and categories. |
Scripts and exit codes
The CLI writes normal results to standard output and errors to standard error. A confirmed down result exits with code 1; invalid input, network failures and rate limits exit with code 2. Everything else exits with code 0.
if ! isitdown github.com --json > status.json; then
echo "GitHub may be down"

What it sends
The package contains no analytics and no third-party runtime dependencies. It sends the domain or search words you type to the read-only IsItDown.now MCP endpoint. It does not read the current directory, shell history, browser data or local files.
Continuously monitored services need no key. One-off checks share the free daily allowance used by the website and MCP server. If you need more, create a free API key and set it once:
export ISITDOWN_API_KEY="idk_..."
